By Scott Squires 03/20/2018, 5:00pm MST

The 14U/12U AZ Lady Coyotes won their first ever AZYHL State Championship beating AHU 12U Grey in a shootout.  AHU struck first on an early first period goal by AHU’s Garrison Dancil.  The Lady Coyotes refused to give up and after a scoreless second period, evened the score on a rebound goal from Willow Troy.  Both teams had quality chances in the third period but AHU goalie Ian Ottley and Lady Coyotes goalie Edith Townsend stood tall forcing overtime.  The Lady Coyotes had to kill a 4-3 man advantage during the overtime and the teams went to a best of three shootout.  Lady Coyote Bella Contreras scored on a wrist shot of the right post on the first attempt.  Townsend made a clutch save on AHU’s first chance.  Troy scored on the Lady Coyotes second shootout chance, beating the goalie to the left side.  Townsend then made the championship save on AHU’s last chance.
